The Top 10 Cabin Crew Lies

Posted on 21:28 by tripal h
To be a good flight attendant, you also have to be a bloody good liar. It’s one of the unwritten requirements of the job. We lie to passengers from the moment they step onto the aircraft. “We’d like to warmly welcome you onboard!”, no we don’t. “If you need any assistance, please ask a member of crew”, no please don’t. “We hope you enjoyed your flight?”, we’re not really bothered either way, as long as you won’t be writing in and getting us tea, no biscuits with management.

No matter how crap a day we’re having, how much abuse we’re getting from the guests, how much shit we’ve got going on at home, how poorly we feel; or how much we really don’t want to be stuck in that metal tube at 35,000 feet, we will continue to follow the ancient cabin crew mantra of ‘Teeth and Tits’ and smile through our pain and frustrations.

Here we count down the top 10 lies we WILL tell you whilst you, our wonderful passengers, are onboard our aircraft. See how many you’ve already been told.

Cabin crew can normally speak more than 1 language!
International Cabin crew can normally speak more than 1 language!

10) “I’ll come back with more information as soon as I have some”
Which will be sometime never. If it’s a technical issue, do I look like a mechanic? Not in this outfit darling. If it’s a weather related delay, well no I can’t work miracles and make the fog disappear, or make the snow melt. To be fair, your over-worked and under-paid cabin crew are always the last people to know anything anyway, so there’s not much point asking us.

9) “There’s no need to worry, our aircraft are perfectly safe!”
If you ignore the gaffer tape on the wing, the broken overhead lockers, the faulty toilet, the sink in the galley that keeps over flowing, the dodgy air conditioning units above row 31 and don’t even get me started on the broken seal around door 2L. Please don’t be alarmed when you discover that this aircraft is almost as old as Joan Rivers and has done more miles than the space shuttle. Our engineers are not only excellent with their tool boxes, they can also work miracles. As our cabin crew queen Pam Ann once said “We don’t make the same mistake more than 3 times, maybe 4?”.
"Please just ignore the flames billowing from the number one engine, this is perfectly normal on take-off"
“Please just ignore the flames billowing from the number one engine, this is perfectly normal on take-off”

8)“This is perfectly normal”
Well we have to tell you that. If it’s a strange noise, we may never of heard it before. If it’s a funny smell, we might never have smelt it before. And if it’s really bad turbulence, it’s probably the worst we’ve ever experienced too. But no matter how scared we are, we will never crack and our perfect, pearly white smile will NEVER waver.

7) “We don’t have any of that left”
Well, first off all it depends what you’re asking me for. We probably do have it left, it’ll just be on the other trolley or all the way back in the galley, locked in a canister. So unless you get me in a VERY good mood, which doesn’t happen very often, I won’t be going to check for you, so it’s probably best if you just pick something else.
"If it's not on my tray bitch, I haven't got it!"
“If it’s not on my tray bitch, I haven’t got it!”

6) “That’s not a problem”
It will be a problem. Whatever it is you have asked me to do to warrant this response, means that you will have taken me away from doing something else; probably going for a well-earned rest, after waiting hand and foot on your fat arse for the last few hours. I’ll be smiling through gritted teeth and counting to ten!

5) “I’ll put that on my flight report”
Well it really depends on what you’re wanting me to write down. If you’re complaining at me and it’s something I’m unable to change, i’ll nod understandingly, whilst I listen to your boring tale. Then i’ll tell you that I will write everything down for you, so that the powers that be can look in to it. If I feel sorry for you I may put down a few words, but don’t expect war and fucking peace.

4) “Thank you for flying with us today”
Yea, yea, you pay our wages. If it wasn’t for you dear passenger, chosing to fly with us, we’d be out of a job – blah, blah; we’ve heard it all before. The truth is, we’d much prefer it if you’d all stayed at home. An empty cabin, is a happy cabin.
"Thank you for flying with us today"
“Thank you for flying with us today”

3) “I LOVE my job!”
Don’t get me wrong it has it’s perks. But if you ask me that question after i’ve done my fourth, 4 sector day in a row, NO. When you’re asking me after a 14 hour flight and i’m hungover from the party we had in the crew hotel last night and i’m back on another trip in 48 hours, NO. When i’ve had to deal with drunken passengers, screaming kids, horrible flight deck and the number 4 crew member is giving me daggers because I snogged the hot, new first officer at said party, NO. But ask me when I’m lay on a beach, sipping a cocktail on a 3 day layover in the Caribbean, then yes, I LOVE my job!

2) “I’m fine!”
We’re probably not. We may have been called out for this flight with just an hour and a half’s notice. Some prick has just had a go at me in business, just because I accidentally knocked into him with the trolley and the pursers took his side. I’m probably on minimum rest from my last duty, just 11 hours ago and I haven’t had anything to eat since I reported over 4 hours ago. On top of all of that I’m full of the flu, because working in recycled air, for 12+ hours a day and coming into contact with hundreds of different people every day, means you pick up every horrible bug going. My airlines sickness policy also means that I’m too scared to go sick, so I’ll come into work regardless and make myself worse. Teeth and tits, teeth and tits!
Finally, coming in as the biggest lie your cabin crew will EVER tell you onboard an aircraft

1)“I’m sorry!”
Normally we’re not. Fact of the matter is, whatever it is we’re apologising for; it probably isn’t our fault anyway. Therefore, why the fuck should we apologise for it in the first place? But we do, as it shuts you up. It makes you think that you have won and makes our life that little bit easier. Yes, I’m sorry for the crap weather that has delayed your flight. I’m also sorry for the French ATC and those bastard Spanish baggage handlers, who have once again decided to go on strike. I apologise that we have run out of Chicken, I know, it’s all my fault and I really should have made sure there was more loaded onboard. I can’t apologise enough that Heathrow can’t handle more than 1 inch……of snow! I’m sorry for the exploding volcano in Iceland and please accept my sincerest apologies for the buggered engine on this state-of-the-art jet; but believe me I would much rather it be broken here than at 7 miles up.

On behalf of us all we REALLY hope you’ve enjoyed your flight and thank you for choosing to fly with Dan Air today.

Posted on 23:14 by tripal h

Travel While You're Young

Posted on 23:59 by tripal h
This is the time for small paychecks and big memories. This is the time for travel. We are about as attached to one location as we are to our favorite Chinese take-out place. We know what we like about it, and we take comfort in the familiarity, but that's about it. - Jessy Tapper

Last June, Jeff Goins wrote an essay for Converge Magazine titled, "Why you should travel young."
Spoiler alert: Jeff is a staunch supporter of travel.

Although the message is not new, I found myself nodding in fast agreement as I reached the heart of his writing:
While you're young, you should travel. You should take the time to see the world and taste the fullness of life. Spend an afternoon sitting in front of the Michelangelo. Walk the streets of Paris. Climb Kilimanjaro. Hike the Appalachian trail. See the Great Wall of China. Get your heart broken by the "killing fields" of Cambodia. Swim through the Great Barrier Reef. These are the moments that define the rest of your life; they're the experiences that stick with you forever.
Traveling will change you like little else can. It will put you in places that will force you to care for issues that are bigger than you. You will begin to understand that the world is both very large and very small. You will have a newfound respect for pain and suffering, having seen that two-thirds of humanity struggle to simply get a meal each day.
While you're still young, get cultured. Get to know the world and the magnificent people that fill it. The world is a stunning place, full of outstanding works of art. See it.
I've had these moments and I've felt these emotions.

The Khmer Rouge killing fields?

Two years ago I stood there in silence, unable to talk to two of my closest friends. I stood in sadness, moved by the terrible crimes and atrocities that occurred on the ground in front of me.

I stood frozen, thinking of the men and women and children and the pain they suffered. I thought of my grandfather and his family -- my family -- and all they suffered through during World War II -- fighting and struggling and persevering to survive persecution of their own.

I stood in disbelief, selfishly considering the site's affect on me. I was painfully aware of just how ignorant my world view was. I realized that growing up just north of Chicago I was never taught about the crimes that were committed here or in many other areas of the world.

Through that naivety I became aware of just how large the world can be.

I was a witness to how much there is to see, experience, and learn.

And I promised myself that I would continue to value travel and exploration.

One lifetime is not enough to experience all cultures. But travel, especially while young, is an essential step to becoming more aware of other cultures and people (it's also an opportunity to see the beauty of the world around us.)

I've heard countless excuses as to why people do not or cannot travel.
Many of my young friends believe that it's too expensive. Others argue that they can always travel later in life. Some suggest that it hinders career advancement.

Let's immediately take the expense question out of the equation.

I have a good friend who traveled the world -- from hikes out in the western United States to South American trips to an adventure on the Siberian rail -- on a grad school budget. I have friends who have financed travel while traveling (they worked remotely or found local jobs.)

I've crossed the Vietnamese/Laotian border by van, driving over a road that was literally being built as we traveled.

Did it feel cheap? Yes. Was it scary? A bit. Could I have paid for it with the proceeds of a lemonade stand? Definitely.

Simply put: Finances are rarely a prohibiting factor to travel.

To the second point, that many people put off travel because "they will get to it later." The Jeff Goins piece provides a fantastic answer.

In summary: it's far more likely that someone will travel first and then come back to achieve great things (secure a graduate degree, fantastic job, start a new career, etc.) rather than the reverse.

It's now or never to make travel a part of your life. You say you'll get to it later, but if it's not important now -- when you're young and limited in your responsibilities -- when will it be?

Finally, people believe that any travel will limit career advancement.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

I have worked in two fairly corporate cultures to start my career. Both organizations stressed the importance of international experience. You need to have experiences in foreign culture in order to advance at these successful, global companies.

International exposure makes you valuable. It will fast track you within your own company or give you the opportunity to pivot into a new position (often with greater responsibilities.)

A final point about excuses...
I have heard these excuses used for more than long trips and opportunities to live abroad.

I have many friends that hesitate to take a week or long weekend off of work. Believe me, short trips won't hurt your career or wallet for every reason listed above and many more.

Take that quick trip to another country when the fare drops. Jump at the opportunity to travel to a new city domestically or to an old location to catch up with a friend.

Travel is an experience -- it knows no limits of time or geography.

As the world becomes increasingly connected, your excuses become increasingly futile.
There is more value to be gained by embracing travel opportunities than avoiding them. An understanding of the world -- of other cultures, people, ideas, and beliefs -- has never been more important. Exploration -- developing empathy and the ability to learn from and deal with the unknown -- has never been more important.

Find the balance of travel that's right for you. Take every opportunity to make that travel an important value in your life.

Move abroad. Spend 12 weeks backpacking. Travel for a month straight. Take a road-trip. Plan a weekend getaway.

Go explore the neighborhoods around your city, travel to states that border your own, or take a trek to an exotic location halfway around the world.

Do it while you're young; set a precedent.

Small paychecks and big memories... right, Jessy?

Posted on 06:42 by tripal h

Posted on 23:53 by tripal h

30 Reasons to Eat Eggs

Posted on 22:24 by tripal h

Eggs have gotten a bad rap in the past and unfortunately, many today still believe the wide spread misinformation.

Are eggs good for you? Do they cause heart disease? Do they raise cholesterol? Should I avoid them?

Depending on who you ask, you may get very different answers to these questions. Many traditional doctors still would answer that eggs increase cholesterol and should be avoided. Some are adamant that only the egg white should be used because of the cholesterol in the yolk. Even when trying to research this topic, some articles still push the idea that eggs are harmful and in order to prevent health problems, one should avoid them.

I have to admit that I once believed the propaganda spread in the media and by drug pushing corporations. It wasn’t until I first began seeing a naturopath that I heard that eggs are good for you and the doctors are the ones who have it wrong. Sure, the first time my naturopath said that, I thought he must be crazy, how could doctors be wrong? Sadly, they are and not just about eggs.

Eggs are actually a super-food, they are packed with nutrients vitamins and health benefits!

But don’t eggs raise your cholesterol?
One of the main reasons eggs are avoided is due to fear of them increasing cholesterol. However, several studies have shown that not only do eggs not raise LDL cholesterol, but lower it. According to a recent study, those consuming 3 eggs per day over 12 weeks were found to have lower LDL cholesterol and raised HDL. Another study showed that those who consumed 4 or more eggs per week had lower cholesterol than those who only ate one egg per week.

Eggs are good for you! Here’s why:
1. Eggs are Full of Vitamins and Minerals- Including vitamins B, C, D, E, K, and more.

2. Lower High Blood Pressure- The peptides present in eggs were shown to help reduce high blood pressure.

3. Great Source of Protein- Eggs are a great source of protein, one egg contains 6 grams of protein.

4. Omega 3’s- Eggs contain a high level of essential omega-3 fatty acids, an essential nutrient and good for your heart.

5. Nine Essential Amino Acids- Eggs are known as the perfect food as they are the only one that contains all 9 of the essential amino acids.

6. Can Lower Your Cholesterol- Eggs do contain cholesterol, however as mentioned above, studies have shown that those who consume eggs regularly had a reduced LDL and an increase in HDL (the good cholesterol).

7. Boost Brain and Nerve Health-One egg contains 20% of the daily recommended intake of choline. Approximately 90% of Americans are choline deficient. Choline is essential for phospholipids used in all cell membranes. Adequate levels of choline are essential for brain and nerve health.

8. Contain Lutein and Zeaxanthin- These carotenoids are an essential component for eye health and defend against the damaging effects of free radicals.

9. Contain Tryptophan and Tyrosine- Two amino acids which have great antioxidant properties. Tryptophan is also important as it is converted to serotonin, a mood enhancer and converted into melatonin in the pineal gland, which benefits sleep.

10. Reduced Risk of Macular Degeneration- Eggs protect your eyes from developing age-related macular degeneration due to the lutein and zeaxanthin present.

11. Good Source of Vitamin B12- Vitamin B12 is an important vitamin for the process of converting homocysteine into safe molecules, such as glutathione, an important antioxidant.

12. Eggs Contain Calcium- One egg contains 50mg (5%) calcium. Although not a large source of calcium, an increased intake can reduce the risk of colon polyups and breast cancer.

13. Eggs Do NOT Cause Heart Disease- The choline in eggs is a crucial nutrient to help reduce the inflammation that leads to heart disease.

14. Reduce Birth Defects- Eggs contain folate, a nutrient which studies have shown to help prevent birth defects when consumed prenatally, one egg contains 44μg (11%) of folate.

15. Good Source of Vitamin A- One egg contains 19% vitamin A which plays an important role in improving the immune system.

16. Promote Healthy Hair and Nails- The sulfur contained in eggs and the additional vitamins and minerals help promote hair and nail growth.

17. Reduce Oxidative Stress- Selenium, an essential macronutrient contained in eggs helps reduce oxidative stress.

18. Reduce Risk of Tumors- Eggs are an excellent source of selenium which has been associated with preventing cancer and in particular reducing tumors affecting the prostate.

19. Eggs Protect Your Eyesight- Not only do they prevent macular degeneration, but the antioxidants in eggs also have been reported to protect eyes from damage related to UV exposure.

20. Reduces Risk of Cataracts- The antioxidants have also been linked to reducing the risk of developing cataracts in old age.

21. Improve Immune System Functioning- The iron contained in eggs helps support a healthy immune system and normal red blood cell production.

22. Lose Weight- In a study from Louisiana State University, participants who ate eggs for breakfast instead of bagels, lost more weight and reported having more energy.

23. Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer- A recent study found that women who consumed high amounts of choline, an abundant nutrient in eggs, were 24% less likely to get breast cancer.

24. Source of Vitamin D- The majority of the population is deficient in vitamin D which is essential for boosting the immune system and preventing cancer. One egg contains 41 IU of the 600 IU recommend daily amount of vitamin D.

25. Reduces Inflammation- The choline in eggs aids in reducing inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation has been linked to increasing the risk of osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, cognitive decline, and type 2 diabetes.

26. Beneficial for Fetal Development- The choline present in eggs is essential for pregnant women as it is crucial for proper fetal brain development and preventing neural tube defects.

27. Reduce Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke- Several studies have shown that the nutrients in eggs help prevent blood clots which reduces the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

28. Improved Memory Function- The high amount of vitamins and nutrients in eggs, in particular choline, improves memory function and cognition.

29. Eggs Can Be Inexpensive- Many are able to get eggs for a great price when bought from local farmers. Another option is to raise your own chickens! Not only does this help save money and provide you with more nutritional value, but you could sell eggs to those in the area to cover the cost of caring for them.

30. Egg Variety- There are many ways to prepare eggs, whether you eat them raw, scramble them up in coconut oil, or boil them. You can also add great variety by adding in nutritious vegetables and herbs, such as to an omelet.

Do you eat eggs?
How often do you eat them?

India’s Incredibly Powerful “Abused Goddesses” Campaign Condemns Domestic Violence

Posted on 02:32 by tripal h
“Save Our Sisters” is an an anti-sex trafficking initiative.

Ad agency Taproot physically recreated scenes from old hand-painted images of Indian goddesses.
Make-up was used to add bruises and wounds to the models before photographing them. This is a recreation of the goddess Saraswati.

All the props were either real or painted on, keeping both authenticity and realism in mind.

“Pray that we never see this day. Today, more than 68% of women in India are victims of domestic violence. Tomorrow, it seems like no woman shall be spared. Not even the ones we pray to.”

Each ad includes a phone number to report abuse to “Save Our Sisters.”

This is a recreation of the goddess Lakshmi, goddess of wealth.

The campaign simply and effectively captures India’s most dangerous contradiction: that of revering women in religion and mythology, while the nation remains incredibly unsafe for its women citizens.

100 million Indians, largely women and girls, are said to be involved in trafficking.

Last year alone 244,270 crimes against women were reported in the country.

This is a recreation of the goddess Durga, worshipped for her strength and invincibility.

The Perfect Nap: Sleeping Is a Mix of Art and Science

Posted on 19:18 by tripal h
There's an art to napping.

Studies have found different benefits—and detriments—to a nap's timing, duration and even effect on different people, depending on one's age and possibly genetics.

"Naps are actually more complicated than we realize," said David Dinges, a sleep scientist at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. "You have to be deliberative about when you're going to nap, how long you're going to nap and if you're trying to use the nap relative to work or what you have coming up."

A snooze on the couch on a Sunday afternoon may seem like the perfect way for a responsible adult to unplug. But at a time when roughly one-third of people report not getting enough sleep, more naps, albeit short ones, might make for a more functional workforce, researchers say.

For a quick boost of alertness, experts say a 10-to-20-minute power nap is adequate.

Sleep experts break sleep down into several stages, which the brain cycles through roughly every 90 to 120 minutes. These stages are broadly characterized into non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. NREM is further broken down into stage one and two, which are considered light and intermediate sleep, followed by slow-wave sleep. Awakening from slow-wave sleep, the deepest kind, results in what doctors call sleep inertia or sleep drunkenness: that groggy feeling that can take awhile to shake off. Finally, there's REM sleep, often associated with dreaming.

Sara Mednick, an assistant psychology professor at the University of California, Riverside, said the most useful nap depends on what the napper needs.

For a quick boost of alertness, experts say a 10-to-20-minute power nap is adequate for getting back to work in a pinch.

For cognitive memory processing, however, a 60-minute nap may do more good, Dr. Mednick said. Including slow-wave sleep helps with remembering facts, places and faces. The downside: some grogginess upon waking.

Finally, the 90-minute nap will likely involve a full cycle of sleep, which aids creativity and emotional and procedural memory, such as learning how to ride a bike. Waking up after REM sleep usually means a minimal amount of sleep inertia, Dr. Mednick said.

Experts say the ideal time to nap is generally between the hours of 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Napping later in the day could interfere with nighttime sleep.

The body's circadian rhythms help people to expect to be awake in the morning and early in the night. "So if you take naps when your brain doesn't expect to be sleeping, you feel kind of thrown off," contributing to the sleep inertia effect, said Rafael Pelayo, a clinical professor at Stanford University School of Medicine's Sleep Medicine Center.

A telltale sign of being very sleep-deprived, he said, is dreaming during a short nap. "Definitely in a 20-minute nap you should not be dreaming," he said.

Ilene Rosen, an associate professor of clinical medicine at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine, said the ideal duration of a nap is still being debated, but generally speaking the "10-to-20-minute nap is really the optimal time in terms of bang for your buck."

Leon Lack, a psychology professor at Flinders University in Australia, found in a 2006 study in the journal Sleep that among shorter breaks, 10-minute naps packed the most punch.

The study compared naps ranging from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, testing 24 participants at each of several intervals. After each nap the individuals were tested on a variety of mental-processing tasks. The sharpness of the 10-minute nappers became apparent "right away," Dr. Lack said, and remained apparent for about two to 2 1/2 hours.

Those who took 20- and 30-minute naps tended to feel groggy immediately after the nap for up to about 30 minutes. From there, they showed mental sharpness similar to what researchers saw from the 10-minute nappers, with that sharpness lasting a bit longer.

Jonathan Brandl is a Newton, Mass.-based consultant who works from home. Up at 5 a.m. to hit the gym, he finds himself fading around 2 p.m. His solution is a fast snooze in a comfy chair in his den. His trick for waking up: He holds a pen or pencil in his hand, which usually falls about 10 to 15 minutes into his nap, waking him up.

"After the nap, I feel totally refreshed and then power through the rest of the day," the 56-year-old Mr. Brandl said.

Though napping at work often remains taboo, experts say growing scientific evidence of its benefits has led select workplaces to accept it.

Christopher Lindholst, chief executive and co-founder of New York-based MetroNaps, has installed specially designed sleeping pods for Google, Huffington Post, an Iowa construction company and the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team. The chairs retail for $8,995 to $12,985.

The 60-minute nap may not be kosher in most workplaces, but it also has its pluses.

In a 2012 study in the journal Neurobiology of Learning and Memory, researchers split 36 college-aged students into three groups. Each group learned a memory task, pairing words on a screen with a sound. Afterward, one group had 60 minutes to nap, another 10 minutes. The final group didn't sleep.

Upon retesting, the napping groups fared better, as expected, said Sara Alger, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Notre Dame.

More interesting, she noted, was that on further testing, including a week later, the 60-minute group performed far better than the 10-minute group, which now performed as poorly as the non-napping group. The researchers concluded that slow-wave sleep—only experienced by the 60-minute nappers—is necessary for memory consolidation.

Researchers continue to explore why some individuals don't seem to benefit from naps. Dr. Mednick said ongoing studies are looking at potential genetic differences between habitual and nonhabitual nappers.

Kimberly Cote, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, said individuals who don't normally nap tend to slip into the deep stages of sleep more quickly than those who do. Studies have found through monitoring brain waves that regular nappers are good at maintaining a light sleep when they nap and show better performance improvements than their non-napping counterparts.

"We're not sure what those individual differences are," she said, "if that's something that they've learned to do over time or if there's something biologically different that allows them to nap like that."

Another trick to waking up perky after a short nap is to drink a cup of coffee before sleeping. Caffeine won't hurt such a short break and should lessen the effect of sleep inertia.

Dr. Dinges recommends sleeping partially upright to make it easier to wake up. Studies, he said, have found that not lying totally flat results in avoiding falling into a deeper sleep.

"A lot of people say, 'I only need four hours of sleep a night.' There's a few of them around but not very many," he said.

Posted on 20:51 by tripal h

What?

Posted on 05:00 by tripal h
