Top 10 chap fan in KL

Mixed rice is cheap and cheerful; you get to eat till you’re stuffed for under RM5. Here are ten stalls we love. By Alexandra Prabaharan

Ah Sou
Good for Luncheon meat, stewed pork belly, fried roast pork, herbal chicken, and curry chicken
Number of dishes At least 40
You’ll be hard pressed to find a dish here that isn’t done well. The food is freshly prepared with care and prices are easy on the wallet especially for being smack in the middle of KL. This is the spot to be for some porcine delights with tasty dishes such as the stewed pork belly and fried roast pork. Yum! Along with the spread, they provide free soup and Chinese tea with your meal. It’s a steal.
First floor, Wisma Central, KL. 11am – 2pm. A meal will not go over RM5.

Subang Jaya SS15 Market
Good for Braised potatoes in soy sauce, fried chicken, sea coconut ice
Number of dishes 50
This chap fan stall is a popular one, especially if you happen to live or work in Subang Jaya. Reason being it’s cheap and good. You can get a whole meal for about RM4 and this is inclusive of the delicious sea coconut ice. The sheer selection will have you drooling and unable to decide on what to get. Remember to try the fried chicken and the braised potatoes as they are absolutely divine.
Jalan SS15/8A, Subang Jaya. 11am – 3pm. Three vegetables and one meat for RM 4.

Blue Boy Restaurant

Blue Boy Restaurant

Good for Really good vegetarian dishes that will have even meat lovers drooling
Number of dishes 40
This spot transformed into a full vegetarian food court when their owners turned vegetarian some 20 years ago. Aside from having a chap fan spread during lunchtime, they also have fully vegetarian nasi lemak, char kuey teow, mee jawa, yong tau foo, prawn mee, lam mee, curry laksa, and even assam laksa. Not only are they meatless but they are actually very tasty too.
6001 Blue Boy Mansion, Jalan Tong Shin, KL. 7.30am to 9.30pm daily. About RM5.

Sun Gee at Cheras
Good for The sautéed vegetables and curry chicken
Number of dishes About 50
This stretch of road, known as ‘wai sek kai’ (food street), is famous for mixed rice. There are quite a few to pick from but Sun Gee is one of the yummiest. Soup and Chinese tea come free, and there is a large variety of dishes to choose from. Parking can be a bit of a pain, but stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with a great meal.
Jalan Bunga Tanjung 10 (same row as Taman Muda 7-Eleven), Taman Muda, Cheras. 11.30am – 2pm. About RM 5.

Sambal Hijau
Good for Large variety of gulai and masak lemak dishes
Number of dishes 40
For a large range of delicious Malay fare, make your way to Sungai Penchala. Yes, we realise it’s little out of the way but trust us, you’ll be happy you made the trek. Here you’ll find dishes that most Malay stalls won’t have, with at least four types of gulai and masak lemak dishes, among others. Another specialty during lunch is the ikan bakar station that has many different types of fish to pick from. And try the kue lompat tikam, a coconuty sweet dessert that is very Kelantanese.
2990 Kg Sg Penchala, Jalan Damansara, KL. 11.30am – 2.30pm. RM 5.

Kuan Yin Temple
Good for Healthy vegetarian chap fan
Number of dishes At least 30
This temple offers healthy yet delicious vegetarian food during lunch hours. It is always packed with people from the nearby offices and we can certainly see why. Free parking is also one of the reasons, but get here early if you want a spot. The vegetarian curry is so rich in flavour that you’ll have a hard time believing it’s meatless.
77 Jalan Ipoh, KL. 11am – 2pm. Under RM5.

Restoran Ming Chu 23 Jam
Good for Cheap prices
Number of dishes 30
Ming Chu is open 23 hours a day, so drop by any time for a bite. The chap fan however, is only available over lunch. Here you can have a meat, egg, tofu, and veggie, and it’ll all be less than RM5. A total steal. There are also other hawker stalls within the area; the pork noodles are a must try.
Jalan SP 2/2, Taman Serdang Perdana, Seri Kembangan, Selangor. Open all day and night, Less than RM5.

Mama's Kitchen

Mama's Kitchen
Good for Mutton curry and the black pepper chicken
Number of dishes About 50
This spot was voted 2008’s best economy rice and we can see why: the spread is good and the food is delicious. Mama’s prices are slightly higher than the rest of the outlets featured here, but we were pretty impressed at how the dishes are organised according to type – braised, fried, vegetables and so on. Come for the yummy mutton curry and the black pepper chicken, but expect to pay a little more than you would normally for chap fan. And surprise, surprise, this chap fan stall is also halal. It gets crowded during lunch so come before 12.30pm, if you can.
Black F Utara, Pusat Bandar Damansara, 11am – 2pm, RM5 and above.

Ghandi's

Ghandi’s
Good for Tasty vegetarian Indian food
Number of dishes 50
If you have a hankering for something spicy, head over to Brickfields for the vegetarian mixed rice at Ghandi’s. You can find your usual Indian dishes like mutton varuval, chicken curry, and more using soy protein to mimic the texture of meat. For something crisp, fill your plate with the battered and fried cauliflower and bitter gourd chips. Absolutely delightful. You’ll leave here full without having to fork out too much dosh.
Scott Sentral Serviced Apartments, Jalan Scott Brickfields, KL. 11am – 2pm. About RM5.

Good Food Restaurant
Good for: Mostly vegetarian and non-meat dishes
Number of dishes: 40
This stall can easily be mistaken for a vegetarian stall as there is a plethora of non-meat varieties. Indulge in the wide selection of tofu dishes and gluten meat substitutes. Don’t worry, there are meat dishes too if you absolutely must. The specialty here is the fried chicken wings – juicy and packed with flavour. You’ll want to get here before the lunch crowd as it does get very packed.
Jalan Penchala, Section 2, PJ. 11.30am-2pm. Under RM5.
